Picture Guidelines

Choosing a photo for your pet portrait is an important step towards getting the perfect portrait - not only because you’ll have so many amazing photos of your pet, they’re all so cute, but you’ll also want to choose a high quality image to meet our recommended guidelines. Read on below for some help in choosing your photo.

We also specialise in memorial pet portraits and understand that getting a picture to meet our guidelines below is not always possible. In this instance, we are still determined to work with you to create a special portrait, so please let us know and we will do all that we can. You deserve a portrait to cherish and remember your beloved pet by forever!

Picture Guidelines

  • Take photos outside (overcast days or in full shade can be best to reduce the shadows on your pet) or if you have to take the photo inside, try and place your pet next to, and looking towards, a large window. The goal is to get as much light on your pets face without creating large shadows.

  • Take photos at your pets eye level - get down low!

  • The best pictures are those where your pet is looking straight at the camera - you can try holding a treat to get their attention.

  • Make sure the photo (especially your pet) isn’t blurry.

  • Ideally, your pets face will take up the majority of the photo and they’re not miles away in the corner of the image.

  • Ensure you don’t cut off any important parts of your pets face - ie. their ears or nose.

  • Make sure nothing is obstructing your pet - ie. a hand in front of their face.

  • Collars, leads and harnesses are absolutely okay and can be removed on request!

  • Avoid using filters on the photo as we want to ensure we get your pets natural colouring.

  • Choose a photo that is as high resolution as possible. This shouldn’t be an issue if the photo is taken on a good smart phone or quality camera.

We will review every photo before we start creating your custom watercolour portrait and if we think your image won’t work, we will get in touch to see if there’s another picture that could work instead. Please note, this will add to the turnaround time for your portrait.

Don’t forget, we also encourage customers who aren’t sure if their photo will work well, to email us at info@pawtraituredesign.com before you purchase a portrait, as we can work with you to choose the perfect photo for a perfect portrait!
